Service Animal Etiquette
The Seminary community makes every attempt to be inclusive of all individuals,
and thus the Disability Resource Center would like to offer the following
information in regard to Service Animal etiquette.
- It is highly probable that you will observe a Service Animal accompanying a
student in your classes or in other buildings around campus. - Service Animals are permitted to access any areas of campus that the Handler
may go including dining facilities. Exceptions are areas where safety is a
concern. - Service Animals are working dogs who perform tasks for the daily activities of
the Handler. There are some etiquette guidelines that community members
should observe when coming in contact with any Service Animal within or
outside of our community.
- Smile and be polite to the Service Animal’s Handler.
- Do not pet the Service Animal.
- Do not distract the Service Animal in any way.
- Do not give attention to the Service Animal. You are not being rude
if you do not acknowledge the Service Animal’s presence. Acknowledging
the animal may distract the animal from its work.
Service Animals can be removed from campus for the following reasons:
- If the animal is out of control and the handler does not take effective action to
control it - If the animal poses a direct threat to the health or safety of others.
- If the animal is not housebroken.
If you witness any of the above infractions, please contact the Disability Resource
Center at disability.resource@asburyseminary.edu and report the incident.
